Electric bicycles are now a common sight on Israel’s streets, especially with traffic getting worse. They offer a convenient way to travel. To improve safety and regulation, Israel’s Ministry of Transportation has announced that starting August 1, 2024, all electric bike and scooter owners must register their vehicles and put a license plate on them.

This rule applies to both Israeli and foreign citizens. Applicants need to have a valid Israeli driver’s license. Foreign citizens can use their foreign license for one year after entering Israel, but after that, they must get an Israeli license. There is information available on how to convert a foreign license to an Israeli one.

For those without a regular driver’s license, a special license for light vehicles is required. To get this, they must pass a written test on bicycle driving, which can be taken from the age of 15.5, though they can only start driving at age 16.

Both Israeli citizens and foreigners can register their vehicles online. The registration form asks for the applicant’s ID number, the vehicle’s manufacturer, color, and serial number.

After registering, the applicant will receive an ID number for the vehicle via SMS. They must then get a license plate from a recognized service center and attach it to their vehicle. 

Currently, it’s not possible to register a vehicle without a phone that can receive SMS messages. The organization Chaim V’Chessed has contacted the Ministry of Transportation, which is working to fix this issue.
